    Triumph Is Released

In the summer of 1980, The Jacksons prepare for the release of Triumph, their fourth studio album under CBS/Epic and their first since Michael’s Off the Wall catapults him into solo superstardom. Despite his newfound status, he remains committed to the group, and he, along with his brothers Jackie, Tito, Marlon, and Randy, takes full creative control of the album, writing and producing every track themselves.

On September 26, 1980, Triumph arrives in stores, boasting a polished blend of R&B, funk, and pop that cements The Jacksons as more than just a Motown-era act. The album quickly climbs the charts, peaking at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the R&B Albums chart. It sells over two million copies in the United States, earning a double platinum certification from the RIAA.

The lead single, “Lovely One,” is released ahead of the album on August 13, 1980. With its infectious groove and Michael’s soaring vocals, the song becomes a major hit, reaching No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on the R&B chart. The next single, “Heartbreak Hotel,” follows in December, a dramatic and cinematic track penned by Michael that showcases his storytelling abilities. Despite its haunting lyrics and production, Epic renames it “This Place Hotel” to avoid confusion with the Elvis Presley classic. The song becomes another success, peaking at No. 22 on the Hot 100 and No. 2 on the R&B chart.

By early 1981, the third and biggest single from Triumph, “Can You Feel It,” gains momentum. Released in March, the anthemic track stands out with its grand orchestration and uplifting lyrics, complemented by an ambitious short film that blends live-action and animation—one of the most elaborate music videos of its time. The song reaches No. 77 on the Hot 100 but fares much better on the R&B chart, where it peaks at No. 6.

To support the album, The Jacksons embark on the Triumph Tour, their first major U.S. tour in three years. Kicking off on July 8, 1981, in Memphis, the tour features groundbreaking production, synchronized choreography, and pyrotechnics that set the stage for Michael’s later solo tours. With sold-out shows across North America, it becomes their most successful tour yet, grossing an estimated $5.5 million.

While Triumph does not match Michael’s solo success, it solidifies The Jacksons as an artistic force. Critics praise its production and sophisticated songwriting, and it wins Favorite Soul/R&B Band, Duo, or Group at the 1981 American Music Awards. Over time, Triumph becomes a fan favorite, often regarded as The Jacksons’ strongest studio album, and its influence continues to resonate in R&B and pop music.
