    Goin’ Places Is Released

In October 1977, The Jacksons release their second album under Epic Records, Goin’ Places. The album follows their self-titled 1976 debut and continues their transition from Motown to a more independent sound, produced once again by Gamble and Huff. While the group remains committed to the sophisticated Philadelphia soul sound, Goin’ Places struggles to match the commercial success of their previous work. It peaks at No. 63 on the Billboard 200 and No. 11 on the R&B albums chart, reflecting a lukewarm reception compared to their earlier efforts.

The title track, “Goin’ Places,” is released as the lead single in August 1977. With its upbeat tempo and sweeping horn arrangements, the song reaches No. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 8 on the R&B chart. It also gains traction internationally, making a stronger impact in the UK. The song’s promotional video, which features The Jacksons in pilot uniforms and performing on an airport tarmac, becomes one of their earliest forays into music video storytelling.

Following the title track, “Even Though You’re Gone” is released as the second single in November 1977. A slow, heartfelt ballad, it showcases Michael’s emotive lead vocals and the group’s harmonies. However, the single fails to make a significant chart impact.

Other notable tracks include “Music’s Takin’ Over,” which opens the album with a high-energy groove, and “Find Me a Girl,” a smooth love ballad that highlights Jermaine’s contributions before his departure from the group in 1975. The album also includes “Different Kind of Lady,” one of the few tracks co-written by the group, signaling their growing desire for creative control.

Despite its modest commercial performance, Goin’ Places sets the stage for The Jacksons’ next move. The group soon begins working on their next album, one that will finally grant them full songwriting and production authority, leading to a major artistic breakthrough.
